Welcome to Open Door Playback Theater - Vernon, Texas

Giving voice to stories that
are often silenced or unheard

Based on the campus of North Texas State Hospital and born in September 2006, Open Door Playback performs shows and holds workshops with hospital patients as well as staff and community groups.

While NTSH is a maximum-security psychiatric facility in a small Texas town, Playback Theatre is a form of non-scripted theater practiced all over the world.

The actors improvise scenes using words, music, movement, and cloth. These scenes are based on true stories told by audience members.

As audiences recognize themselves in the the universal themes of the stories of others, this art form not only honors the individual, but also fosters a sense of community.
